Gravitee.io, an open-source API management platform, has raised $11M in a Series A round, led by Oxx and AlbionVC, to expand its development, sales, and marketing teams. Tide, Auchan, and other firms use Gravitee.io’s main API administration tool.
The new funding will allow Gravitee.io to expand its development, sales, and marketing teams, and improve support for its community of development teams, execute on the Gravitee.io.io team’s enlarged vision for API management, and expand deeper into international markets.
Gravitee.io was formed in Lille, France, in 2014 by four co-founders who had been developing API implementation methods for French retailers. However, they quickly discovered that there was no suitably versatile enterprise-grade open source API platform available for the job.
As an open source API platform, Gravitee.io gives businesses and their developer’s unprecedented control and transparency over their entire API ecosystem. APIs are now business-critical, so extensibility is a key consideration for businesses. Fully understanding the code base — and being able to contribute to that open-source code to align to your business requirements fully — is a key benefit.Rory Blundell, CEO of Gravitee.io, told VentureBeat
Cockpit, a tool for monitoring all Gravitee.io installations from a single centralized dashboard, is at the top of the Gravitee.io tree. Underneath that is the open source API manager, which is released under a permissive Apache 2.0 license, and the enterprise edition, which adds a slew of paid premium capabilities to the mix.
Gravitee.io has also included an open-source identity and access management (IAM) module in its product portfolio, allowing organizations to quickly interface with different identity providers and personalize the sign-in experience for their applications.
Gravitee.io’s position as “the only next-generation API platform with both API management and identity and access management,” according to Mr. Blundell, is being cemented.
We have replaced Auth0, Keycloak, and other IAM solutions at some of our customers, so we do compete with them, but this is not our primary market. Our access management offering is focused on augmenting API-based experiences with next-gen security — for instance, with built-in facial recognition authentication support.Rory Blundell, CEO of Gravitee.io
Gravitee.io seeks to set itself apart from both proprietary and open-source competitors by offering an all-in-one API management and IAM platform that allows businesses to authenticate and authorize users.
API management is becoming globally mainstream, as businesses worldwide become increasingly reliant on their API infrastructure. Gravitee.io.io is on a mission to solve a complex business problem with one easy-to-use platform that delivers unprecedented commercial flexibility and superior ROI.Mikael Johnsson, a general partner of Oxx
Companies like Tide, Auchan use Gravitee.io’s main API management tool and “many tier 1 corporate customers” to govern how their APIs are used, developed, and monitored.
